CBCT Scan
A Cone Beam Computerized Tomography scan, also known as CBCT, is an x-ray technique that produces 3D images of the skull. It allows visualization of internal bony structures in cross-section instead of overlapping images typically provided by conventional x-ray exams. .The scan provides detailed images of the bones, and it is performed to find diseases of the dentition, jaws, bony structures of the face, nasal cavity, and sinuses. The growing accessibility of this technology is now providing the dental clinician an imaging modality, which is useful in creating a 3-D representation of the maxillofacial structures with minimal radiation hazards.

Preparation for the CBCT Scan
A cone-beam CT scan generally requires no special preparations. However, prior to the scan, an individual may be asked to remove items that can interfere with the imaging, including metal objects, jewelry, hairpins, hair aids, etc.
- Fasting: No fasting is required for CBCT scan.
- Ongoing Medication: Kindly inform us about any ongoing medications for you may require a special preparation for your examination.
- Advice for Pregnant women for CBCT scan: Please inform the dentist if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
- Clinical Records: While coming for CBCT scan please carry all your relevant medical records for reference (Doctor’s prescription, treatment summary, surgery details (if any), etc. Submission of such clinical records helps doctors to work-up and identify your case-specific diagnostic detailing.
- Old Records: If a prior CBCT scan has been performed, kindly do not forget to bring reports. Without reports of the previous scan, comparison for measuring improvement or deterioration of examination will not be possible.
Process for the CBCT Scan
The entire CBCT Scan procedure should generally take less than 30-60 minutes, of which Scanning time per se is approximately 3-5 mins depending upon the clinical conditions.
- Verification of Documents: After reaching the location at your specified Time the reception staff verifies your documents are complete. Please ensure that you carry your hospital records and previous scan reports and images to enable the best case detailing for yourself.
- CBCT Scan Conducted: You will be asked to sit on the examination chair/stand/table, depending on the type of CBCT scanner being used. The technician will position the patient in such a way that the area of interest is centered in the beam. An individual will be asked to stay still while the X-ray source and detector revolve around them. The scanner will scan the area of interest and produce photographs.
- Wait for Reports: Since CBCT Scan is a detailed investigation, our team of Oral Maxillofacial Radiologists will be reviewing and reporting your study within 24-48 working hours. You should get an SMS regarding your report as soon as the CBCT Scan and Other Tests (if any) are approved.
- Wait for Films and CD (Optional – Rs. 500 Extra Charges Apply): If your doctor requires film and CD, ₹499 charges are applicable for the same. The film and CD will be available alongside the report.

Limitations & Challenges in CBCT

- As it is based on Computed Tomography, CBCT falls short of MRI in evaluation of soft tissue structures such as muscles, lymph nodes, glands, and nerves.
